This is by no means a survival guide, but my goal is to help you not make the same mistakes I did, and believe me they sucked. This is mostly guided at my fellow international students, as it might seem more obvious to UK locals. The first days of University are a whirlwind and it’s important to make sure the first nights sleep in your new dorm is a restful one.

Now for those of us who don’t want to hall 4 pillows, duvets and linens in our suitcase on the way over, we need to find some bed sheets abroad. Since the last budget store for bedding in town has closed the options locally are limited. Now if money is no issue go over to Farmore interiors on South Street and pick up a set of silk bedding, this stuff is life-changing, I may or may not have even splurged on two pillowcases in my last year here, I feel like I deserve it.  Just be ready to spend at least 100 pounds for each piece of the set.

My first two years however I went with John Lewis bedding. John Lewis is a home store online that has a good range of bedding and even other home goods that could be useful for the first part of your year. There is also a store in a mall in Edinburgh called Home store and More. This is where I found my sheets first year. Going inside and being able to feel and see what you are buying is always helpful.

The university offers a “Bedding Kit” from a website called UniKitOut, you could order these if you want to scratch your eyes out. All I heard my first year was complaints about how poor the quality was, and how uncomfortable they were. The price range is too good to be true, dont buy it! Below are some links to hopefully help you rest easier.

John Lewis is the online home good store, with a location in Edinburgh. The price is right for what you are buying and it will deliver to your dorm. Standard UK shipping rates, so order before you get here! If not you can do a order and collect in Edinburgh as there is a location there.

Home Store and More in Craigleith, Edinburgh. This is where I got my bedding first year, it is a home goods store with great prices and fun designs on bedding. Go inside and feel which sheets you want to sleep on!
